Architect Made

We scour archives, drawings and museums to reveal what makes for mastery. The result? Architectmade is a glimpse into a few, rare design objects that some of Denmark’s leading architects created along their way to fame many years ago.
Why do we do it? Our passion goes beyond form and function. We believe in moving away from a throw away culture and celebrating timeless products that last. These are products you don’t get tired of looking at, and with excellent craftsmanship alongside three rounds of quality control, they are made to stand the test of time. The Architectmade objects are designed to share, for generations to come.
These products, as stated by one of our favorites, Kristian Vedel, “emerge from the inside out.”Each Architectmade object is designed with architect-precision and personal vision that comes from the heart, reflecting the individual values, beliefs and ways of life of some of the greatest Danish architects of our time.
Testament to their elegant simplicity and refined craftsmanship, they’ve become icons, standing the test of time and serving as reminder that in today’s trending world, quality is still timeless.

3 ROUNDS OF QUALITY CONTROL, ALL TOUCH BY HUMAN HANDS.

We do some of the most stringent quality control out there. No product goes to market without our hands touching it. Any imperfection is rejected. We demand the highest precision and work diligently to ensure that you receive only the best.
Every single piece of wood in our products is hand selected in order to ensure absolute consistency across products. We reject any product that does not meet our design requirements. No excuses. No exceptions. We stand apart by sticking to our standards. You won’t find this passion for perfection anywhere else.

HAND SELECTED & HAND CRAFTED.
From architect to manufacturer, our production process is a collection of unique experts from Denmark and around the world. Each product is carefully paired with selected craftsmen who understand the rigor and attention to detail that our products demand.
We don’t believe in leaving the work up to others, so we adhere to precise craftsmanship, ensuring that each detail is executed to the standard of Architectmade, every step of the way.

MWA, Makers With Agendas

MWA stands for Makers With Agendas behind MWA is founder Architect Julien de Smedt, Co/Founder Designer William Ravn and their third partner product designer Wouter Dons.
They address matters of society to create meaningful products. They call this agenda-driven design. MWA is engaged in thinking, producing and distributing design.
They operate across scales and disciplines from Their two divisions:"The MWA product division where our designs materialise and the MWA project division where we think, perform and implement our agenda-driven design principles outside the boundaries of our product division."
Julien is also the owner of JDS Architects and have been working with William and Wouter for years before founding MWA in 2013.Their design orientation is one of ingenuity over beauty, of content rather than looks. Which is why their style is in fact very minimal. They like the focus to be on the function and its idea rather than a taste judgment.

Nina Tolstrup

True to her Danish roots, simplicity and integrity are trademarks of Nina Tolstrup’s work. A simple and contemporary yet also distinctive aesthetic, combined with the belief in good design for all is a recurring theme in everything she designs.
She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and completed her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris in 1990. Throughout her entire career, Europe has been Nina Tolstrup’s scene. She has a strong international profile and, among other things, has worked as a concept developer, freelance photographer, head of design and freelance designer. In 2000, she established the London-based design studio StudioMama with her husband and design colleague, Jack. Nina Tolstrup describes herself as an optimist, and finds inspiration in her family. And it is also in the family summer cottage in Seasalter, England, that she likes to be most of all. She is a colourful person who prefers to work with wood. And she has a passionate belief that designs made for real life go a long way to describing her timeless and informal style – also many years from now

Niels Hvass

Niels Hvass creates clear, precise expressions that place the user centre stage. And his designs are based on a deep-felt wish that one must be entranced and fall in love. And that both emotions grow as time passes. Niels Hvass is an idealist with sincerity as a key value. He was born in Nykøbing Mors, Denmark, in 1958 and qualified as a furniture designer from the Danish School of Design in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1987. Together with Christina Strand, he has run the design studio Strand + Hvass since 1991. But his impressive career also includes teaching at the Danish School of Design, membership of the grants committee and board of the Danish Arts Foundation, exhibitions at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition, etc. He grew up by the shores of the Limfjord, so the sea has always been an element that both attracts and inspires him. Niels Hvass believes in keeping things simple, and he would rather explore each material in its right context than prefer one particular material to any other. For it is in working with the materials that his inspiration grows, and ideas become reality. And there is no shortage of ideas. So far into the future he will be busy realizing new visions and designs – pioneer figure that he is.

Maja Bøgh Vindbjerg

Maja takes inspiration from the Nordic traditions.
This, along with her understanding of production methods and a knowledge of the challenges and opportunities various materials afford, results in minimalistic and simple solutions in form and level of detail.

Hans Bølling 1931-

Born in 1931 in a small town of Braband in Denmark, Hans Bølling’s work is known for its play, humor and wit. A passionate spirit whose practice and products are inspired by creative diversity, Bølling’s interest in architecture drew him back to school for a secondary degree and graduated as an Architect from the Royal Danish Art Academy after training as an advertising designer, growing his practice beyond objects to include villas, living complexes and town halls. Early in his career he began to craft small figures from botanicals as gifts for family and friends. The precision and personality in his objects paved the way for success as he quickly began to sell the wooden figures to stores. As luck would have it, Bølling shortly thereafter won an award for the designs and invested the winnings into his own carpentry machine. The access to the means of production kick-started the production of Bølling’s now-famous Duck and Duckling in the 1950’s.

Ditte Buus Nielsen

That thing you have always needed. An overlooked object at a flea market that sparks your imagination. An interesting function that can be incorporated into alternative contexts. As a designer, Ditte Buus Nielsen is inspired by this sort of scenarios, and as design director for Skagerak, she is also used to seeing things from the other side of the desk. This unique position gives her insight into the entire process, and she is well aware that dialogue and cooperation are the recipe for the best products. ’As a designer, I prefer to work with the products from start to finish, preferably in close cooperation with the companies, so that my ideas are heard, and the resulting product represents the optimal outcome for both parties.’

Ditte Buus Nielsen has an MSc in industrial design from Aalborg University, and her whole life she has loved developing ideas and creating things. Along with the functional aspect, simple expressions that are drafted on paper and translated into miniature mock-ups are what trigger Ditte’s creative mind. Wood and metal are some of Ditte Buus Nielsen’s preferred materials, and the subtle designer has a practical approach to her profession that is firmly rooted in rational factors and holistic processes with everyday life and design history as two parallel paradigms and key sources of inspiration – along with the ambition of one day designing the perfect chair…

Thomas Dudzinski

Thomas Dudzinski is born in 1985 and graduated from the School of Architecture in Aarhus,Denmark with a master’s degree in design. During his education he participated in several competitions and received profound acclaim for his designs. He developed his talent in Sydney with the well-known designer Charles Wilson. A period in his life which has influenced the way Thomas Dudzinski approaches design. Behind a modest appearance lies a determined wish for perfection, detail and beauty, with focus on quality and durability. About his approach, Thomas says: “My ambition is to create simple and honest design with a strong character giving the receiver an experience. I love challenging materials, products and people’s behavior.
My design process revolves around the search for a new, better, different or humorous idea.”

Finn Juhl 1912-1989

Finn Juhl is one of Denmark’s most famous architects, known for his bold sculptural forms and ultra-refined detailing in his Designs.Initially, Finn Juhl wanted to become an art historian. Since his early years, he had been very interested in fine arts. However, his father wouldn’t allow a career in the arts.
He therefore trained as an architect and began his studies in 1930, which was an important period in furniture design, when modern design started to emerge.
While he was still a student, Finn Juhl started working with the prominent Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1934, where he worked on major projects such as the Danish Broadcasting House and Copenhagen Airport.
Finn Juhl was kept so busy, that he never finished his studies. Despite this, he received the honor of becoming a member of the Academic Architect Society in 1942, and later in life, he became a visiting professor at the Institute of Design in Chicago.Finn Juhl left Vilhelm Lauritzen’s practise to start his own i 1945.

Art dictated Finn Juhl’s designs. He also used his artistic sensibilities to use his design as a reflection on his own times. It was Finn Juhl’s ambition to create designs with a personality that reflected both functionality and aesthetics. It was the human freedom as reflected in surrealism and cubism that inspired Finn Juhl.Particularly Jean Arp’s portrayal of the human torso and Barbara Hepworth’s modernist sculptures.
It has been said about Finn Juhl, that he thought a piece of furniture should be seen as an individual piece of art and not just as part of the overall interior design. Furniture should reflect the personality and originality of the artist, and at the same time be a practical piece of functional art – rather than a sculpture.
He generally used teak and other dark woods, unlike many of the other proponents of the Danish Modern movement who often used oak in their designs.

Here at Nordic decors you can buy Finn Juhls Turning Tray.
The Turning Tray was designed in 1956 by Finn Juhl, bearing his trademark curved teak frame and precise corner joints. Made without handle bars, the tray’s curvature allows space for all sizes of hands, from child to adult, to pick it up. Designed as dual-sided, the Turning Tray boasts two glossy laminate sides held together by carefully crafted corner joints.

Kasia Lilja

Kasia Lilja is a design company that offering graphic, minimalist prints and posters it is founded by the 29 yrs old Polish-born artist, Katarzyna Lilja Wasilewska and it's based in Horsens, Denmark.
Kasia has lived in Denmark for more than 25 years; she lives and breathes for the true, honesty, humor, good karma and positivity in life which shines through in her work.

In collaboration with her partner Søren Beyer who is the owner of Inhouse Fotografi made the photographic posters called The Catus Family 5.The story behind this poster project is both romantic and yet very common for most couples. The art of moving in together. As Kasia and her boyfriend Søren where moving in together they needed an interior and decor project to make a common ground. This new home should embrace the family´s values and in the end be a safe haven for the whole family.
As they are a modern family with 2 adults and 3 children - 5 in total the number five always has been a symbolic thing for them. Therefore they bought 5 cactuses as a home decor project and with Kasia´s passion for posters and Søren´s passion for photography they quickly agreed on making the plants as photographs for theirs walls as well. This is how a love story about moving in together started and made the cactus as a fundamental for a new life.”

Kristian Vedel 1923-2003

Was a Danish industrial designer, he completed his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in 1942 and in 1946 he graduated from the Furniture Design Department of the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Copenhagen, where he also lectured 1953-56.
Influenced by Kaare Klint and the German Bauhaus school, his "classic modern" designs are characterized by creative use of materials, especially plastics and wood, and with a strong sense for ergonomic and functional requirements.

In an interview, Kristian Vedel stated his position as follows:
The starting point for an industrial artist's work must always be that he, from his own point of view, and as objectively as possible, takes a position with regard to what he feels society and his fellow men need; he must personally take a stand on the existing possibilities and responsibilities.

Paul Anker Hansen

Paul Anker's design philosophy is based on an appreciation for playfulness at all stages of life. He believes that the "land of childhood is a land forever", and applies his pure passion for creativity to the design of everyday objects, infusing them with a playful and light approach that brings a new attitude and imagination to one's life.
Paul Anker's design career started when he took his love of animals and made them in wood as small gifts for himself and his family. He eventually began to sell his designs and a hobby was suddenly transformed into a career, bringing smiles to the faces of generations to come.

Paul Anker grew up on the island Bornholm Denmark.
He and his three brothers spent their childhood using the forrest as their playground, They were captivated by the owls in the tall ash trees. He watched them during the day as they sat closely to the tree trunks, and when darkness fell Paul Anker and his brothers sneaked out to watch the owls, and they shivered as they whizzed past our heads on the hunt for mice. The owl has fascinated him ever since then and gave him the inspiration for his classic owl which came to life in 1960.The Owl was put into production by the Skjøde Knudsen, a wood carver shop in Skjern unfortunately they went out of business in 1977. After this, Paul Anker Hansen made the owls by hand as gifts to friends and family. His children and friends encouraged him to find a new producer so the owl wouldn't be forgotten. Architectmade picked up the production again in collaboration with Paul Anker Hansen and continues to make the owl in Denmark.

VE2

The design trio VE2 is made up of three creative individuals: Hugo Dines Schmidt, Tilde Nygaard and Morten Lauritzen. In the interface between form and space, the ambition is to create cohesion via characteristic and aesthetic designs with a clear functional justification.
They come from various parts of the country, but all three qualified in industrial design from the School of Architecture in Aarhus, Denmark and worked with established design houses and architects before establishing VE2 in 2007. It is in everyday life, the people in it and the fact of making a difference that they find inspiration for new designs and projects. And they do not prefer one material above any other, but enjoy working with all materials that can be designed, become enhanced with age and reflect a ‘life’ or be combined with something new. Hugo, Tilde and Morten are sterling individuals with a strong functional aesthetic sense and a pronounced ability for adapting. Separately and together they weigh up the good in life in general and the design studio in particular. And they are on the move and yet very much present in the now at one and the same time. They unwind and enjoy life. Hugo prefers Svinkløv Badehotel, Tilde the sea shore at the end of her road, and Morten a well-provided table with family and friends around it.

Kay Bojesen 1886 - 1958

Kay Bojesen graduated as a silversmith in 1910 after completing his apprenticeship with Georg Jensen.
He was among the first to enthusiastically embrace functionalism in Danish crafts, and he co-founded “Den Permanente” a showcase retail shop featuring the best in Danish design for decades.

In the 1930s, Kay Bojesen began to explore his interest in working with wood in earnest.
Among other things, he created a series of wooden animals which all matched his belief that design should be round, soft and feel good in your hand.
His intention was not to create replicas of animals but imaginative variations with a “smile” in the design lines.

This is what Kay Bojesen had in mind when he created his beloved figures that appeal to the child in us all. Their joyful expressions have brought pleasure to many, all over the world. Since the closure of Kay Bojesen’s legendary store on Bredgade in Copenhagen in 1990, several of his products have ceased production. It is, therefore, a great pleasure for Rosendahl Group to reintroduce a number of Kay Bojesen’s wonderful old designs, remaining true to the original drawings and with great respect for his stringent requirements when it comes to materials and craftsmanship.

Dorthe Mathiesen & Karsten Noel

New York’s legendary Chrysler building, the characteristic Vasabro bridge in Stockholm or Arne Jacobsen’s iconic town hall bell tower in Aarhus.
ViSSEVASSE portrays the distinctive landmarks of cities and countries in a subtle palette with a Nordic expression that leaves out all superfluous features while preserving the mood of recognisability, history and art deco inspiration. ViSSEVASSE is Dorthe Mathiesen and Karsten Noel, who have worked for the past 20 years in the combined field of fashion, production design and graphic design.

ViSSEVASSE was founded in 2013 and launched Langebro as the first city poster. With its references to 1930s poster artists and the mint/turquoise colours of the era, it set the tone for the upcoming collection of posters featuring landmarks from Danish and European cities.
‘We see the posters striking a nostalgic chord with the audience, as they are reminded of the summer holidays of their childhood when they see the poster of the caravan in the Danish landscape – or of the skiing holiday in Norway when they see our interpretation of the snow-covered mountains,’ says Karsten Noel.

Dorthe Mathiesen always visits the selected places with her camera to get the perspective, the angle and the visual first-hand impressions in place before returning to the studio to draw the posters, layer by layer. The entire process, from the original idea to the finished result, is often enriched by informative and inspiring stories about places that carry special meaning to people. ViSSEVASSE communicates personally with the users in social media, where people generously share their memories. This serves as a source of inspiration for Dorthe Mathiesen when she draws – for example, the window in the tower was included because a girl described how she loved the view from there.
’Many have encouraged me to make a poster from their city or country, and some people have written to tell me that I misspelled the abbreviated names of the cities. But there is a graphic point to it. The abbreviations are about visual balance and a mental gimmick – you think you’re reading something else, because you’re used to seeing the name of the city spelled like that,’ Dorthe Mathiesen explains.

The newest edition to the collection is GO BABY which includes the posters 2CV CITROËN, Balloon Dream, Skiing, Racing Bicycle. VW Beetle and Vespa.
Sometimes it is as if we forget what is important in our lives.
It is so easy to tack after the goal and forget to enjoy the road.
The philosopher Soren Kierkegaard was not in doubt:
- The goal is nothing. The road is everything.
